Standard (Analog) Telephone Reference Guide

Here are quick step-by-step guides for basic calling functions on a standard (analog) telephone.  This reference guide relates to the familiar 12 numeric,*, and # buttons.

Call Holding

To place a call on hold:

  1. Flash the switchhook
  2. Press *4

To retrieve a call on hold:

  1. Flash switchhook or lift handset
  2. Press *4

Call Waiting

To accept a waiting call:

  1. Flash switchhook
  2. Press *4
  3. Hang up handset
  4. Second call will ring the extension of the phone in use
  5. Lift handset

To alternate between calls:

  1. Flash switchhook
  2. Press *4

Transfer Calls

To transfer an existing call:

  1. Flash switchhook
  2. Press *1
  3. Listen for dial tone
  4. Key-in extension number
  5. Announce call, if desired
  6. Hang up handset

Abbreviated Dialing

To store an abbreviated-dial number:

  1. Lift handset
  2. Press #4*
  3. Key-in one or two digit reference number
  4. Listen for confirmation tone
  5. Key in the number that needs to be stored
  6. Listen for confirmation tone
  7. Hang up handset

To place an abbreviated-dial call:

  1. Lift handset
  2. Press #4
  3. Key-in one or two digit reference number

Conference Calls

To set up a three-way conference:

  1. Flash switchhook
  2. Press #1
  3. Listen for dial tone
  4. Key-in internal or external number
  5. Announce conference, if desired
  6. Flash switchhook
  7. Press #1 to connect callers
  8. Repeat above steps to add additional parties

Callbacks

If the extension is busy:

  1. Flash switchhook
  2. Press *7
  3. Listen for confirmation tone
  4. Hang up handset
  5. There will be three short rings when the called extension is no longer busy
  6. Lift handset

To leave a message if no answer:

  1. Flash switchhook
  2. Press *7
  3. Listen for confirmation tone
  4. Hang up handset

To return a callback message:

  1. Lift handset
  2. If there is a message waiting, the word "MESSAGE" is repeated three times
  3. Press *7

To queue if all lines are busy:

  1. There will be a callback announcement
  2. Press 5
  3. The system will announce a three-digit queue number
  4. Hang up handset
  5. There will be three short rings when a line is available
  6. Lift handset
  7. System will repeat three-digit queue number

Call Forwarding

To activate:

  1. Lift handset
  2. Press *3
  3. Listen for confirmation tone
  4. Key-in number where calls are to be forwarded
  5. Listen for confirmation tone
  6. Hang up handset
  7. The word "FORWARD" is repeated three times each time someone attempts to obtain dial tone

To cancel:

  1. Lift handset
  2. The word "FORWARD" is repeated three times
  3. Press #3
  4. Listen for confirmation tone
  5. Hang up handset

Last Number Redial

To redial the last outside call:

  1. Lift handset
  2. Press #9

Call Park

To park a call:

  1. Flash switchhook
  2. Press *9
  3. System will announce a parking number
  4. Hang up handset

To retrieve a parked call:

  1. Lift handset
  2. Key-in parking number

Call Pickup

Group:

  1. Lift handset
  2. Press #7
  3. Any ringing extension in the pickup group will be answered

Extension:

  1. Lift handset
  2. Press #7
  3. Listen for confirmation tone
  4. Key in extension number

Do Not Disturb

To activate:

  1. Lift handset
  2. Press *6
  3. Listen for confirmation tone
  4. Hang up handset
  5. The word "PRIVATE" is repeated three times each time someone attempts to obtain dial tone

To cancel:

  1. Lift handset
  2. Press #6
  3. Listen for confirmation tone
  4. Hang up handset
