COVID-19 Mail Services Safety Protocols

Our community may have questions or concerns about the safety of parcel and package handling and delivery. Mail Services has been and will continue observing and practicing the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance on social distancing and use of face coverings. Furthermore, the University continues to monitor guidance and recommendations from the CDC, United States Postal Service, UPS, and FedEx.

According to the CDC, "Coronaviruses are thought to be spread most often by respiratory droplets. Although the virus can survive for a short period on some surfaces, it is unlikely to spread from domestic or international mail, products, or packaging."

Despite this very low risk, Mail Services is following the strategies and measures recommended by the CDC and L.A. Public Health for mail handling, and has implemented the following precautionary workplace measures:

  • Signature capture requirements for package deliveries have been discontinued.
  • Staff and visitors are required to observe physical distancing and wear face coverings when entering Mail Services, Central Receiving, and the Student Mail Center located at Tyler Campus Center.
  • Hand sanitizer stations and social distancing floor markers are available at all three Mail Services areas.
  • Office computers, handheld devices, telephones, service windows, and countertops are thoroughly sanitized after each use.

The United States Postal Service recommends customers follow the same CDC basic guidelines after accepting deliveries or collecting mail from a post office or home mailbox that would apply to running errands or shopping for groceries. These include washing your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds or using hand sanitizer with at least 60 percent alcohol. UPS and FedEx have temporarily implemented no-contact pickups and deliveries, including temporarily suspending most signature requirements.
