Fitness Instructor Job Description

Definition and Purpose

Fitness Instructors report to the Fitness Programs Manager and the Student Manager of Fitness. They teach a variety of classes currently offered within the Group Exercise Program. Instructors are responsible for developing individual lesson plans, being familiar with various styles of class formats offered, supervising class participants, and leading instructional sessions.

  • Extensive knowledge of specific class being taught
  • An understanding of current trends in fitness
  • Previous experience in supervising and leading participants in an instructional environment
  • Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, muscular function, exercise program implementation, safe group exercise or instructional procedures, and use of related class materials and/or equipment
  • An ability to learn new formats is desired
  • Consistent attendance at continuing education workshops, lectures and conferences
  • Ability to provide positive customer service
  • Appreciation for individual uniqueness and diversity
  • Ability to provide a welcoming, inclusive environment for all participants
  • Ability to work with special populations and those with special limitations or needs

Required Experience

Candidates must be currently enrolled at Pepperdine or be a faculty/staff member at Pepperdine. Students at Pepperdine must possess a cumulative GPA of 2.0. First Aid and CPR certification will be required. Professional instructor certification related to field of expertise is desired; or applicant must demonstrate proficient instructional ability for specialized classes. Period of Employment

Employment is contingent upon approval of semester contract. Employment with this organization is of an "at will" nature, which means that the Employee may resign at any time and the Employer may discharge Employee at any time with or without cause.


Pay will be commensurate with experience, ability, and class. Early morning, evening, and weekend hours may be required.

Closing Date

Applications are accepted throughout the year. Applications should be submitted before the end of the current semester to be considered for instruction during the following semester.

Starting Date

Must be available for training and orientation one to two weeks prior to the beginning of the new semester.
