Exemption Request

Convocation is a formative academic requirement for all full-time Seaver College students. For more information on this requirement, please refer to the Student Handbook. Each student is required to fulfill this curricular aspect of their education. Exemptions to this academic requirement are considered only in extreme cases. The Convocation Exemption Committee will give final approval for applicants.

The deadline for Fall 2017 Exemption Request Forms and Supporting Documentation is September 18th 2017 by 5pm.

SPECIAL CASES

The special cases listed below do not need to complete the "Convocation Exemption Request Form." However, the actions specified under each case are required to be completed in order for exemption to be considered.  If for any reason you fall under the criteria listed below and are still seeing a Convocation grade on your student Wavenet, please contact us immediately:

1) GRADUATE, NON-DEGREE SEEKING STUDENTS

     a) You are automatically exempt from Convocation and no further action is required.

2) STUDENTS WHO ARE PART-TIME BEFORE THE END OF THE ADD / DROP PERIOD

     a) You are automatically exempt from Convocation and no further action is required.

3) STUDENTS WHO WITHDRAW TO PART-TIME PRIOR TO REFUND PERIOD Monday, October 23rd, 2017.

     a) Please email the Convocation Office at convo@pepperdine.edu with your name, CWID and the date you became a part-time student.

4) STUDENTS WHO WITHDRAW TO PART-TIME AFTER Monday, October 23rd, 2017.

     a) You are no longer eligible for exemption based solely on your part-time status.

5) RESERVE OFFICER TRAINING CORPS (ROTC)

     a) Please request that the commanding officer of your ROTC detachment write a letter on official letterhead. Request that your name and CWID are in the letter explicitly stating that you are enrolled in ROTC. Request that the officer email the letter to the Convocation Office at convo@pepperdine.edu.

 6) STUDENT TEACHING or MANDATORY INTERNSHIPS

      a) Please email the Convocation Office at convo@pepperdine.edu with your name, CWID and the course number of the mandatory internship in which you are enrolled.

      b) The email must include a screenshot of your class schedule showing your name, CWID and the internship course number. The screenshot is to be a weekly calendar view. You can access this view by logging onto Wavenet and accessing Student Services, then the Student Center and clicking on the Weekly Schedule link, then choosing Weekly Calendar View. Take a screenshot of the entire screen to ensure your name and ID are included.

      c) Until you are able to provide your class schedule, your exemption is pending. We strongly encourage you to attend Convocation events until you have received a confirmation email from the Convocation Office stating that you are exempt from Convocation.

(Note: Not all internships are mandatory for graduation. Please contact the Registrar's Office to confirm that your internship is mandatory.)

7) STUDENTS WHO HAVE COMPLETED 8 SEMESTERS OF CONVOCATION

      a) Please email the Convocation Office at convo@pepperdine.edu with your name, CWID and a copy of your unofficial transcript showing that you have completed 8 semesters of Convocation at Pepperdine.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR REQUESTING A CONVOCATION EXEMPTION

If you do not qualify as any of the special cases above, you may request an exemption from Convocation by following the steps below. Please note that exemptions are granted only in extreme cases by the Convocation Exemptions Committee.

1. Fill out the Convocation Exemption Request Form.

2. Bring in a hard copy of supporting documentation to TCC 104, the main Convocation office. Please note that in the past many students omitted this step and their request was unable to be processed.

Click here to view the Convocation Exemption Information Sheet. This is a one page printout of the instructions for requesting a convocation exemption and the checklist for supporting documentation.

3. Complete the Convocation Exemption Request Cover Sheet. This must be done in the Convocation Office, M-F, 8a-5p, with a staff member.

You will receive an email informing you of the Exemption Committee decision. If you are exempt, it will be for this semester only. You will need to reapply each semester.

If you are granted an exemption, you must complete the Exemption Reflection Form at the end of the semester. This is due by Wednesday December 6th by 5:00 pm.
