Employment Options for International Students

As a Pepperdine University student, you have access to the Handshake job platform. Handshake offers part-time job opportunities both on-campus with the University and off-campus with local employers. Additionally, students can use Handshake to find internship opportunities.

Process for International Students

Here are the steps in obtaining employment on-campus with Pepperdine University:

  1. Find a position on campus that is departmental pay.  Please go to the following site to learn how to search for jobs: How to Find On-Campus Jobs
  2. Once you have been offered a job and accepted the position, please notify your hiring supervisor to contact the Student Employment Office by sending an email to (student.employment@pepperdine.edu).  The email must contain the below information:
    • Student employee full legal name
    • Student employee's campus-wide ID number
    • Student's start date of employment
    • Expected job end date
    • Department name
    • Hours/week student will work (remember, students cannot work more than 20 hours a week for all jobs on campus)
    • Student's Position Title
    • One sentence describing the duties of the student employee position
    • Supervisor's contact information (telephone number and email address)
    • Location of the office (Malibu, Irvine, etc.)
    • SUBJECT LINE of Email: Employment Letter Request for the Social Security Administration
  3. The Student Employment Office will have a letter written for the student employee to take to the Social Security Administration Office.  WAIT until you receive an email from the Student Employment Office notifying you to pick up the letter at their office.
  4. Make an appointment with the Office of International Student Services (OISS) by phone (310-506-4246) or by email (oiss@pepperdine.edu) to request a letter to take to the Social Security Administration. Allow 1 business day for processing.
  5. Before going to a U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) office, you must be "registered" in SEVIS by the Designated School Officer (DSO) .  Your on-campus must begin within 30 days of your SSN application date. Locate an SSA office near you at www.ssa.gov.
  6. Go to the Social Security Administration Office (SSA).  Bring the following items to the SSA:
    • Passport
    • Form I-20
    • Form I-94
    • Employment Letter from the Student Employment Office
    • Enrollment Verification Letter from OISS
  7. Obtain a letter of receipt from the SSA, so that you may work while your SSN application is being processed.
  8. Schedule an appointment at the Student Employment Office (phone number: 310-506-4177) to fill out employment and tax paperwork. Bring:
    • Passport
    • Form I-20
    • Form I-94
    • Letter or receipt from the SSA
  9. Schedule an appointment at the Payroll Office (phone number: 310-506-4636) to fill out employment and tax paperwork. Bring:
    • Passport
    • Form I-20
    • Form I-94
    • Letter or receipt from the SSA
  10. You are now ready to begin work!  Please be sure to set-up direct deposit and report your hours onto Kronos.  Visit the following page to learn how to do both of these things: direct deposit instructions and Kronos instructions
  11. As soon as you receive the SSN card, sign the card and bring original to:
    • Student Employment Office
    • Payroll Office
