Security Tips: Updates
Overview
Keeping Software Up to Date
The Computer and Network Responsible Usage Policy requires everyone whose computer is connected to the Pepperdine network to keep the software programs and operating system up to date with manufacturers' patches. Update the operating system and programs on your computer as automatically as possible. Restrict your updating to (1) update settings you can set in the software itself; and (2) updates available from the manufacturers' web pages.
It is a common technique for malware authors to present you with a message stating you need to update some software or component of your system. Therefore, if any such message appears, return to the program itself; or browse to the manufacturer's Web site to perform the update. Do not update from third party Web sites.
