CABE Pepperdine and Dean of Pepperdine Libraries present: Día de los Muertos
Please join us in viewing Pepperdine's Día de los Muertos display presented by CABE Pepperdine University and the Dean of Pepperdine Libraries. This display will be available at the West LA Graduate Campus Library from October 29th-November 5th.
Día de los Muertos is one of Mexico's traditional holidays reuniting and honoring beloved ancestors, family and friends. It is an ancient and enduring tradition when the living commune with the dead - a mystical night when the veil is lifted between their two realms and they may share a day together. The historical roots of this celebration date back to the pre-Hispanic cultures of the indigenous people of Meso-America, especially the Nahua and others native to Mexico more than 3,000 years ago. When the Spanish imposed Catholicism on the country, this indigenous custom was rooted so deeply that after five centuries it has continued to survive and remain as celebrated today. Ofrendas are now displayed in homes across Mexico, Latin American, and the United States where families pay tribute and respect to loved ones that have passed.
Help us celebrate this tradition of honoring and remembering family and friends. We are particularly mindful of how painful the past two years have been as we struggled through a global pandemic. If you want to help set up, meet in the circulation area at the WLA Graduate Campus Library at 4pm on Friday 10/29. There is a prayer basket with cards for you to write the name of a loved one. Cards will be offered up in prayer during the season of All Souls.
