Today: Attend the Art and Art History Lecture Series Featuring David Schneller, assistant professor of ancient art history, UCLA

Monday, October 6 • 10 AM • Weisman Museum of Art

Join the Seaver College college community for a lecture titled, “Bronze Across Borders: Experiments with Metal in the Ancient Eastern Mediterranean.” During this talk, David Schneller will take listeners on a journey that spans from Syria and Crete to the depths of a Greek well in the early centuries of the first millennium BC.

This lecture explores a remarkable story of cross-cultural artistic experimentation in the ancient eastern Mediterranean, centered on three bronze sculptures that transcend both time and space. We will uncover the fascinating life histories of these artworks: how they were created, the materials and techniques that gave them form, and the circumstances of their deposition and rediscovery.

Along the way, we will consider the broader networks of artistic exchange that shaped their imagery. Ultimately, this talk asks a pressing question: if these sculptures are so significant, why have they slipped through the cracks of ancient art history?
