Attend Discussion on Christian America and the Kingdom of God
On Wednesday, October 22, 2025 from noon to 1:30 PM in the Payson Library Surfboard Room, Pepperdine Libraries and the Center for Faith and Learning invite the University community to join Christina Littlefield, Seaver College associate professor of communication and religion, and Richard Hughes, Pepperdine emeritus professor of religion, for a conversation exploring Christian nationalism in American history
Littlefield updated and extended Hughes’ 2009 book, Christian America and the Kingdom of God, adding the subtitle: White Christian Nationalism from the Puritans through January 6, 2021 (University of Illinois, 2025). The book illuminates the good fruit that came from the American pursuit of a Christian America, but also the poisonous ways this pursuit led promoters to an empire state of mind, paradoxically undermining the faith and US democracy. Hughes will participate in the conversation remotely via Zoom, and Littlefield will answer questions in person about the past, present, and future of a Christian America.
Everyone is welcome to attend, and refreshments will be provided. The first 50 faculty and staff to register and who attend in person will receive a free copy of Christian America and the Kingdom of God.
