Pepperdine Libraries Presents Living Epistle: Art of Steve Prince

From Thursday, June 20, to Sunday, November 10, 2024, Pepperdine Libraries will host the exhibt Living Epistle: Art of Steve Prince.

Artist Steve Prince spreads messages of faith and hope that are philosophically rooted in the cathartic nature of the jazz funerary tradition of his native city, New Orleans. The showcase of prints at Payson Library celebrates the Black experience, with depictions of everyday life alongside those of significant historical moments of fighting against injustice. Also on view in their original format is a series of Prince’s linocut illustrations featured in Flannery O’Connor’s Why Do the Heathen Rage?, the new book by Jessica Hooten Wilson, Fletcher Jones Endowed Chair of Great Books. Together, the narrative and metaphorically complex works on display demonstrate Prince’s deftness in using signs and symbols to tell stories that express his unique vision.

On Thursday, October 10, 2024, from noon to 1 PM, Pepperdine Libraries will also host a discussion with Prince and Wilson in the Surfboard Room for a conversation about the artist's work and his process working on the book illustrations. Everyone is welcome to attend, and refreshments will be served during a reception in the Exhibit Gallery directly following the conversation.
