Pepperdine University Launches New Logo
Following extensive research, development, and collaboration across the institution, president Jim Gash announced the launch of the University’s new logo.
The new logo reinforces the University’s brand pillars of Christian faith and academic excellence. Trademarked in the fall of 2023, the logo will be visible across the institutional landscape and incorporated in all branding materials effective immediately.
“Today, we celebrate the launch of our new logo, which represents the University's brand pillars and emphasizes a steadfast commitment to our values,” said president Gash. “The logo features our Phillips Theme Tower, symbolic of our faith, as well as our remarkable Malibu campus nestled between the steadfast Santa Monica Mountains and the unrestrained Pacific Ocean.”
Designed by famed architect William Pereira, the Phillips Theme Tour was completed in 1973 and continues to boldly represent Pepperdine’s commitment to its Christian foundation and values. The icon is derived from the University’s official seal and incorporates the school’s official colors, blue and orange, more distinctly than ever before.
“There are rare windows of opportunity for strong brands to disrupt the market and establish themselves as a preferred alternative,” says Sean Burnett, senior vice president for Integrated Marketing Communications and chief marketing officer. “The world needs Pepperdine University now more than ever. Now is the time to tell our story with a bold new logo and refreshed brand strategy that will position Pepperdine as the nation's premier Christian university.”
The logo was designed by Pepperdine’s Integrated Marketing Communications department creative team led by the University’s creative director, Keith Lungwitz, and designed to work in all spaces across all media. Driven by emerging trends in social media, mobile, and web that require adaptation to new media and platforms, many organizations like Pepperdine have updated their brand marks in favor of the simplicity of cleaner visuals in mobile application stores and social avatars. The new logo is the first time the University has had a distinctive icon in 25 years.
