Records Retention
The University’s Records Management Policy guides departments on the proper creation, preservation, supervision, and disposal of University records, whether physical or electronic. The Policy provides the heightened requirements for records containing confidential and restricted information and highlights the role of historical value and preservation orders in the record maintenance process.
Through the Records Retention Schedule, the Office of the General Counsel recommends retention periods for the official copy of records from various categories. Departments should use the Schedule in conjunction with the Policy as a resource for consistent record maintenance and disposal. The Schedule is updated annually or as needed.
