Churches of Christ on Baptism:
The Story of the Five-Finger Plan

Wednesday, May 6, 2025 | 11:45 AM - 12:45 PM
Kresge Reading Room, Payson Library, Malibu Campus

Pepperdine is a Christian University with its heritage rooted in the Churches of Christ, of which George Pepperdine was a lifelong member. This affiliation continues to shape our commitment to the Christian faith while fostering a community that welcomes individuals from all backgrounds.

Human Resources and Pepperdine Libraries' Rushford Center are pleased to present Churches of Christ on Baptism: The Story of the Five-Finger Plan by Dr. James Gorman, Senior Fellow for the Rushford Center for Research on the Churches of Christ.

Dr. Gorman will explore the origins and development of the “Five-Finger Plan,” tracing how Churches of Christ have approached questions of baptism and salvation over time. The session will examine the historical and theological context behind these beliefs and consider how they compare with perspectives across the broader Christian tradition.

This event is open to Pepperdine faculty and staff. Lunch will be served. Register for the luncheon here.

Many offerings throughout Harbor are led by Pepperdine colleagues, providing a meaningful opportunity to learn from and connect with members of our own community while deepening your understanding of the University’s heritage and mission.

All Malibu full-time faculty and staff are encouraged to attend at least one session of their choice each day. Full-time faculty and staff at other campuses are encouraged to attend one full day. Harbor attendance will be considered paid time. Please check in with your supervisor to ensure sufficient workplace coverage.

Review the Harbor 2026 webpage and schedule for additional information.
