Online Tutoring FAQs

Zoom

Where can I sign-up for a Zoom account?

Visit Information Technology’s Web Conferencing for Learning page on the Community website to learn more about how to sign up for a Zoom account through Pepperdine.

If I am having trouble with my Zoom platform or account on my computer, who can I contact for help?

If you encounter any technical difficulties when accessing or using the Zoom platform, please contact Tech Central at 310.506.4357.

Will I only be able to access Zoom on a laptop? Or can I use another electronic device (i.e. smart phone, tablet) to participate in a tutoring session?

While many students will choose to use a computer to access the Zoom platform, it is based on your personal preference. You can engage in a tutoring session via the Zoom platform with any modern mobile device that has a stable internet connection with a microphone that meets the mobile device requirements.

Tutoring Session

Will I need to make an appointment since tutoring will take place in an online format?

Peer tutoring through the SSC will continue to operate on a first-come, first-served drop-in basis. Students will be able to view a comprehensive list of tutoring sessions offered by subject and course, and click on the Zoom link during the day/time listed to join a particular tutoring session.

What does the check-in or check-out process look like for an online tutoring session?

When you join a tutoring session using the link listed on the Online Tutoring Schedule, you will have effectively checked-in to the tutoring session. When you are ready to check-out, you will select the red “End Meeting” button in the lower right-hand corner in the Zoom meeting window.

How does online tutoring via Zoom work?

Once you join the tutoring session, the tutor will introduce themself and proceed with the tutoring session. You will have the option to communicate using video chat, or via the chat box in the Zoom window. While using these features is not required when attending the tutoring session, your tutoring session may be improved by using one, or both of these features.

What if I try to join the online tutoring session, but the tutor is not there? Who do I contact?

If you access the link listed on the Online Tutoring Schedule and the Zoom meeting does not begin at the regularly scheduled time, please use the Tutoring Help Request Form to contact the Student Success Center.

If I am working on a homework problem, how can I share the problem with the tutor?ToggleHeading5

There are a few different options available if you are looking to share a homework problem with a tutor on the Zoom platform. Students could choose to:

  • Communicate the problem using video chat
  • Take a photocopy of the homework problem and share the image in the chat box
  • Type out the problem in the chat box

Do I have to use the video feature in a tutoring session?

No, it is completely up to you. You do not need to share your video if you are not comfortable doing so. SSC tutors are adaptable and will use other tools to communicate with you during the tutoring session (i.e. chat box, whiteboard).
