Welcome to The Center for Faith and Learning
CFL at 25!
The 2024–25 academic year marks the 25th anniversary of the Pepperdine Center for Faith and Learning
About Us
Since 1999 the Center for Faith and Learning (CFL) at Pepperdine has been a primary
catalyst for nurturing the University’s mission-critical synergies between Christian
faith and academic excellence. Over the years, thousands of faculty, staff, students,
and administrators have participated in the CFL’s “faith and learning” events including
vocational retreats, academic workshops, and international pilgrimages. CFL is the
only formal mechanism at Pepperdine that brings community members together from all
six schools for such purposes. The Pepperdine University Center for Faith and Learning
grounds its work in the mission of Pepperdine University as it seeks to enhance the
connections between classroom teaching, scholarship and Christian faith and practice.
Our Core Convictions
The work of the CFL builds on the following three convictions:
- Christian commitment fosters academic excellence: This reflects 2,000 years of Christian intellectual traditions as well as the specific emphasis on education found in the heritage of Churches of Christ.
- Faculty development is key for creating opportunities for student development: While CFL values and serves all members of the Pepperdine community, research conducted by Pepperdine’s Christian Spirituality Research Institute shows that students and alumni identify classroom experiences and relationships with faculty as primary influences on their professional and personal development). In this way, CFL seeks to help “form the formers.”
- Pepperdine is distinct among Christian universities: By virtue of its heritage, diverse community, and premier academic status, Pepperdine
has a distinctive role to play in American and Christian higher education.
