In Case You Missed It... Owning Your Career
On July 24, 2024, Kyle Stiemsma, Director of Human Resources, led a workshop titled “Owning Your Career: Purpose, Calling, and Growth.” Inspired by books by Gorick Ng and Cal Newport, colleagues engaged in fruitful conversation about developing themselves and their careers, and the resources available at Pepperdine to do so. During the session, faculty and staff:
- explored the meaning of work through a Christian perspective and thought deeply about what and who we are called to.
- considered the difference between a “passion mindset” versus a “craftsman mindset,” and how passion in your work is the result of mastering unique skills.
- learned practical and actionable rules to build career capital and professional value, focusing on both hard skills and soft skills.
Check out the following slides and quick guide for practical advice on owning & growing your career. The session’s material was influenced by the following two books:
- So Good They Can’t Ignore You: Why Skills Trump Passion in the Quest for Work you Love by Cal Newport
- The Unspoken Rules: Secrets to Starting Your Career Off Right by Gorick Ng
Additional sessions on this topic will be offered at Graduate Campuses and virtually later this year.
