Informal Recreation

Informal recreation includes free recreational sports equipment rentals as well as access to open recreational facilities available throughout the Malibu campus.  In an effort to increase recreational equipment and activity options for the student body, Campus Recreation provides Games and Sports Activity gear rentals which are available for checkout out of the Pepperdine Fitness Center during normal operating hours. Items available include, tennis rackets, basketballs, soccer balls, footballs, volleyballs, kickball, cornhole, spikeball, volleyball nets, and more!

Open recreational facilities other than the main fitness facilities on campus include; Alumni Park Field, Marie Canyon Field Sand Volleyball Courts, dorm beach volleyball courts, tennis courts, campus pool, track, outdoor basketball courts, teqball, and a nine-hole disc golf course.


  Rental Process for Individuals

This rental process applies to all individuals who wish to rent informal rental items for themselves. Reservations cannot be made in advance for individuals at this time. All equipment must be checked out in person on the day-of, returned same-day and are offered on a first-come-first-served basis. 

To reserve equipment:

  • Step 1 - Head to the Pepperdine Fitness Center front desk and let the staff know that you are wanting to rent some equipment.

  • Step 2 - Create a DSE membership for rentals if you do not have one already.

  • Step 3 - Select which item(s) you would like to rent.

  • Step 4 -  Review and sign the Informal Rental Equipment contract and the Instructions for Informal Rental Equipment Care.

  • Step 5 - Collect your equipment and have fun!

  Rental Process for Groups

This rental process applies to groups of two or more people. All group rentals can be made up to three weeks in advance and are based on inventory availability. Groups may reserve equipment for a duration period of up to five days at a time.

Recreational Facility Schedules

  Basketball Open Rec

Open-court basketball is available at the Track Basketball half-court & the Towers Basketball full-court.

  Volleyball Open Rec

Campus Recreation offers open-gym volleyball at Firestone Fieldhouse in the fall and spring semesters and is open to the entire Pepperdine community. No signups or pre-registration is required and all equipment is provided! Just bring your Pepperdine ID for on-site check-in and have fun!

  • Wednesdays: 9pm-midnight*

*Some exceptions apply due to athletics competitions and visiting team practices. All changes to the open-gym schedule are posted on the intramurals webpage - scroll down to the “News” Section for the appropriate updates.

  Pickleball Open Rec

Located at the PCH Tennis Courts, there are 8 new pickleball courts open for recreational play year-round. Some exceptions may apply for various Athletics & Club tennis/pickleball events. Nets are always present at the courts and you may rent pickleball equipment for free through the Campus Rec department.
