Overview

As of Fall 2025, the primary learning management system (LMS) at Pepperdine University is Pepperdine Canvas. Discover the history and details of our LMS below.

Several weeks before the start of a new academic term, we create the official class sites on the LMS.

LMS Retention

The University has adopted a 5-year retention period for LMS class sites.

LMS History

  • Pepperdine Canvas (2024-present): Starting in 2024, Pepperdine piloted the Canvas LMS as a potential replacement for Courses/Sakai. Starting Fall 2025, the University officially adopted and transitioned to Canvas as its primary learning management system.
  • Courses/Sakai (2009-2025): Starting in 2009, Pepperdine piloted the Sakai LMS as a potential replacement for Blackboard Learn. Starting in Spring 2011, the University officially adopted Sakai as its primary LMS at that time. Sakai's last semester for class sites was Fall 2025.
  • Blackboard Learn (~2004-2010): Starting in approximately 2004, Pepperdine piloted Blackboard Learn as its initial LMS. Originally used by GSEP and Seaver College, the University adopted Blackboard Learn as its central LMS in 2007. Blackboard's last semester was Fall 2010.
