What Is HIPAA Security?

HIPAA at Pepperdine University

The University has several entities covered by the federal "Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act". Patient Health Information (PHI) is covered by HIPAA and includes nearly all information related to medical or psychological treatment from appointments and practitioner communications to medical records.  The main points you need to know about HIPAA data at Pepperdine University are:

  1. HIPAA data is RESTRICTED information in our Information Classification policy.  This data requires approved encryption when stored or transmitted.
  2. Working with HIPAA data requires specialized training. If you are working for one of our clinics or training rooms, you will receive specialized training in safely and confidentially handling Patient Health Information (PHI).
