Add a Menu Link with the Redirect Tool
Overview
Learn how instructors can use the Redirect Tool in Pepperdine Canvas.
What Does It Do?
The Redirect Tool is a custom app that allows an instructor to add a link to the main course menu. You give the link a custom name and decide whether it should open within the page frame (e.g., elevating a Page or test to the main menu) or in a new tab or browser window (e.g., an external website link).
How You Can Use It
- Add a link to a textbok publisher site, web form, or other external resource.
- Elevate course content to the main course menu.
Instructions
- Go to the class site in Pepperdine Canvas.
- Select Settings in the main course menu.
- Select the Apps tab at the top of the page (between Navigation and Feature Options).
- Wait for a moment for the approved applications to load.
- Select the Redirect Tool (look for a large blue arrow icon).

- On the Redirect Tool information page, select the +Add App button.
- Fill out the Add App form for the Redirect Tool:
- In the Name field, enter the name you wish to display in your course menu.
- In the URL Redirect field, enter the web address or URL of the website. The beginning of the link must start with https://
- Choose the desired options:
- Force open in new tab (For External Links Only): Do you want the link to open in a new browser tab or window? If you are linking to a feature or page in your class site, do not select this option.
- Show in Course Navigation: IMPORTANT! Choose this to add the link to your main course navigation menu.
- Show in Account Navigation: Not applicable. Do not select.
- Show in User Navigation: Not applicable. Do not select.
- Select Add App to finish.
Once added, you may reorder the tool location in Settings and Navigation.
Test your link to be sure that it functions as expected. If you set your link to open in a new tab, students will see a blank Pepperdine Canvas page with an "Open in New Tab" button.
