Student Accommodations in Pepperdine Canvas

Overview

Professors can provide academic accommodations for students in several ways within Pepperdine Canvas.

Office of Student Accessibility

Students must apply with the Office of Student Accessibility (OSA) to receive accommodations. OSA will contact each instructor and provide a letter explaining the official accommodation needs, types, and/or details.

Please refer to the OSA Faculty Information page for more information about the accommodation process.

Best Practices

  • Safeguard Anonymity. Do not accidentally expose a student's accommodation status.
  • Use "Differentiation Tags" instead of "Groups." In Canvas LMS, Differentiation Tags provide a private mechanism for instructors to assign accommodations to multiple students. In contrast, the "groups" feature creates a collaborative space for students to coordinate and communicate with one another, so it is not an appropriate approach for providing accessibility accommodations.

Assignments

Any activity with an "Assign To" feature (e.g., Assignments, Discussions, Quizzes) can offer different open and due dates, etc., for students. This flexibility allows you to assign students who need accommodations to have extra time or additional submission attempts.

  1. Add or edit the assignment.
  2. Scroll to the "Assign Access" section, go to the "Assign To" field.
  3. If you have not already done so, set the appropriate dates and times for "Everyone."
  4. At the bottom of the "Assign To" section, select the "+Assign To" button.
  5. In the new "Assign To" field, enter the specific student name or differentiation tag (of multiple students) for the accommodation. Note: Once a new individual, differentiation tag, or section is chosen, the "Everyone" option should change automatically to "Everyone else."
  6. Configure the Due, Available From, and Until dates and times for the accommodation.
  7. Fill in or modify any additional assignment features.
  8. Scroll to the bottom and select "Save" (if just a draft) or "Save and Publish" (if ready to allow student visibility or submissions based on the date settings).

New Quizzes

The Moderate feature in Canvas New Quizzes offers a powerful way to deliver assessments and meet the needs of students with accommodations. Applying a moderation accommodation can apply to all quizzes in the course. Instructors must modify the available/due/until dates to allow for the total possible time of a student's accommodation.

Adjust the Availability Window

  1. Add or edit the quiz.
  2. Scroll to the "Assign Access" section, go to the "Assign To" field.
  3. Configure the quiz for "Everyone" (students without an accommodation).
  4. Select "+Assign To" button to add the student or differentiation tag for the accommodation. (Note: if editing an existing quiz and choosing "Assign To" instead of "Edit" from the options, then the button is simply called "Add" in the Assign To side panel.)
  5. In the "Assign To" field, enter the student name or select the differentiation tag.
  6. Modify the Due Date, Available From, and Until dates and times to provide the possible window for the accommodation.
  7. Select "Save" or "Save and Publish" to complete the initial process.

Apply the Extra Time or Attempts

  1. Go to Quizzes.
  2. Next to the quiz, select the options button to the right (the 3 vertical dots or kabob icon).
  3. Select Build.
  4. Select the Moderate tab.
  5. Select the name of the student who requires an accommodation.
  6. Add the appropriate accommodation
    • Choose "Give additional time" to enter a consistent amount of time for ALL quizzes, such as 30 additional minutes. This only works if every quiz will have the same time limit for all quizzes.
    • Choose "Time limit multiplier" to enter a consistent time limit multiplier, like 1.5 or 2.0, which will dynamically adjust the time limit based on each individual assessment. If quizzes may have different time limits, then choose this option and align the multiplier to the official value provided by OSA.
  7. Repeat for any additional students.
  8. Select "Save" when done.
