Course Import: Copy Materials from Another Class Site in Pepperdine Canvas

Overview

It's easy to import content from a "Sandbox" site or a past class into a new class. Use the Canvas Course Import Tool (aka "Import Course Content" feature) to bring assignments, files, and other content to your desired site.

What Does It Do?

The "Import Course Content" feature within a site's Settings tool helps you copy content from one site to another. When you import existing content into a new or different class site in Pepperdine Canvas, you can think of this as a "merge" action, adding the copied materials to the site. Performing this import once will not overwrite existing content in a site. Repeating the import with the same content, however, can overwrite materials. See the "Avoiding Data Loss" section below to learn more.

How You Can Use It

  • Copy Content from "Sandbox" (or staging) Site to Official Class: Import content from a person's Sandbox site to an official class site for teaching.
  • Replicate Multiple Sections in the Same Term: Build your content in one class section and copy the content to other sections of the same class.
  • Reuse Past Content: Import materials from previous class sites into new class sites so you don't have to recreate activities again.

Avoiding Data Loss

Warning! If you import the same content more than once, you will overwrite existing content in the course. The first time that you import content, it will merge the data into the class site. However, if you import the same materials again — e.g., assignments, pages, discussions, quizzes, etc. — it can potentially alter or replace any student work that had been submitted to those activities.

Therefore, we recommend that you only import the same content once and only before you publish your class site. This will prevent accidental overwrites or removal of any student data.
